The Poem for Baghdad
(Baghdad's Poem)
I died today in Baghdad
When having tea between the two rivers
At a teahouse
Oh, what rivers, what people and what a Mesopotamia
Someone called me
A girl with gold earrings
A car passed by
A young man ran away
And the there was a blast
Oh, what a blast, what an explosion
What deaths, what groans?
I saw a man die out with the death of his family
I saw a child remain dumb
I saw a girl of whom only her gold earrings were remaining
One wanted to steal them
Even my name.
I died today in Baghdad.
In Baghdad.
Oh, what a city, what a territory, what a Mesopotamia
Blossomed of its plains are lonely now
Blueness of its rivers red
Who awaits me now?
Blueness of a lonely blossom by the river?
Eyes of a waiting girl whose gold earrings are being taken in a hand?
Oh, Baghdad, Baghdad where is my way?
Wind blows
One inquires himself from anther
Day has left Baghdad hence.
